I’ve always been drawn to spareness and simplicity, carving human and animal forms that integrate abstract and figurative styles. It was only after many years of work that I began to make more purely abstract carvings, such as Sphere, Wave, Jubal’s Harp, and Black Form.

I gradually came to realize that energy and movement can be expressed without direct reference to the external world, that one can find abstract and figurative elements in nearly everything. This realization freed me to carve in whatever style best fit the form I wanted to make.
