I made Moonflower many years after I first started carving. I was interested in recurrent patterns in nature, in this instance the way a human head and neck could resemble a stem and flower.
As I worked on it, the form sometimes looked abstract and plantlike, and at other times more like a human head and neck. After a few weeks of work on it, I dreamed I saw my face in a mirror, looking the same as usual, except my hair was a bright, slightly bluish shade of green. I took this to mean I should lean more heavily toward the plant theme, and the form you see here, with the stem-like neck and the thin moon-face was the result.
The evolution of Moonflower (click to view) was a transformative experience for me. It was a stylistic departure that inspired much of the work that followed, especially the series of sculptures I call Eve and Other Goddesses.
